…My very chaotic work space

Despite the title, I’m really not that sad or anything, I just want each title of this development blog to have a funny referential title, I like Smashing Pumpkins too…

Recently as of about a month ago, I wrapped up the last of my paid commissioned work on the soundtrack for a project by a very talented developer. Since the start of this year. I’ve been sporadically working on my own game that will proceed my last project, Squid’s Manslaughter, in both quality and content… If you haven’t played Squid’s Manslaughter please check it out, it’s free on Steam…”

Introduction

Long ago, back in the ancient year of 2020, I announced a little game on RPG Maker.net as well as on a few other sites, it was called Flesh Harvest, I was pretty young, 19 or 18 I believe. Somehow, Flesh Harvest got featured on that website, which amazed me, I didn’t really know how to capitalize on the attention I got at the time. I’m thankful for all of the people who supported the game and left input, as well as the people giving words of encouragement. I wish that site was still around, but sadly it’s not much of a thing anymore, it introduced me to a lot of inspiring and unique games from all across the world from different independent developers.

So, why am I bringing this site up? Well, I used to have a development blog hosted there during the early development of Flesh Harvest, I used it to give updates at the end of each month, I’m wanting to start something again similar to that, but on this site.

Progress Report

So far, I’ve finished a small amount of the game, I barely had anything before this month. I’ve put together a lot of the story and gameplay concepts, but there’s still a massive amount of work to do. The game while initially produced in RPG Maker VX Ace, is being reworked in the more modern, RPG Maker MV. I found that Ruby doesn’t work well on modern systems, Java is more acquainted towards optimization for modern OS’s, I can do a far more without lag. At one point I was considering making the game in Unity, but RPG Maker streamlines a lot of the work you’d need to make a JRPG, and sadly, I don’t have a huge amount of free time to work on this game, so a lot of the structure and skeleton already being there helps me out a lot when it comes to focusing on the art, music and mechanics.

The second iteration of the game that I worked on in 2024, this version was scrapped due to feeling too directionless

..What is Flesh Harvest?

So, how would I describe Flesh Harvest? Well, it’s a narrative based game that’s inspired by Castlevania, Harvest Moon and Postal. I noticed the decline of quality monster catching games that can introduce new mechanics aside from just being, Pokémon but slightly different...! So I’m making a modern monster catching game, that is both aesthetically and, mechanically distinctive from it’s contemporaries. You don’t so much catch monsters, you draw them in your sketch book as ideas. You tame enemies by playing a minigame. in where you time your rhythm to complete a final drum beat, you can do this if you have the required ink type.

...Premise

The game takes place in the mind of a troubled child who has to cope with the fact that their family has been torn apart by their father, his name is Leviticus. The child was taken into a cult in which he is the leader. His wife has custody of there daughter, named Clover, but she’s become a neglectful mother due to her rampant alcoholism and adultery. Leviticus, now older, regrets his choices in life and desperately tries to undo the harm he’s caused, however, his mental affliction and years of conditioning by the CIA has given him episodes. where he’s disconnected with reality and obsessed with transcending, to finally be in touch with what he perceives as god. It’s now up to you as the player, to learn the story of your shattered father, and to either forgive the troubled man you once called dad, or, do so much worse out of your own anguish…

…Inspiration

I’ve always been fascinated with the stories of cults, and, the survivors from those types of situations. One big inspiration behind the plot of this game, is the disturbing story of David Berg’s cult known as, The Family International, this is just one of the many US based cults I’ve taken inspiration from. The Kingdom of the Cults: The Definitive Work on the Subject by Walter Martin, is good at explaining how the many sects of new ageism masquerade as Biblical teachings, while deliberately, contrasting the Bible.

The occult, freemasonry and how they silently but effectively shape the world is fascinating to me. This game does have strong elements of that premise. My previous work, Squid’s Manslaughter also took inspiration on how Freemasonry was tied into the overall control of the world, however, it was in a more tongue-in-cheek satirical way…

You should reallllyyy check out Squid’s Manslaughter

…Closing

I would love to discuss more of the game, but for your sake, I won’t drag this on for longer than it needs to be. This is just a general overview of the game, and, my inspirations. I’ll be posting at the end of each month starting today, if you’d like to support me, on Ko-Fi please do, as every little bit helps, I’m still trying to set up a Patreon, but I’ll have one of those soon…

~Thank you for reading, have a fleshy day…
